Elvira Miranda, 2021 Scholar

Lehman College - Hostos Community College

Elvira came to New York as an immigrant, hoping to pursue her dreams. Education has always been extremely important to Elvira, giving her both refuge and a sense of structure when she felt lost. She’s also grateful to have found friendship and guidance at school, as a single mother with no family here. In 2021, Elvira received her A.A. degree from Hostos Community College, graduating with honors in community health. Her goal was to graduate with her children by her side. Now that she’s achieved this goal, she’s ready for even more new challenges and opportunities. Although life can sometimes be hectic and difficult in the Morris I Houses, Elvira does not focus on her disadvantages. She sees the benefits of living in the projects as a low-income single mother, and is grateful for her community.

Elvira is now studying to be a health educator, at Lehman College. She is passionate about giving her community the tools and resources to live healthy, happy lives - emotionally and physically - amidst the ongoing pandemic.
